2008-2009 Schedule Guidelines/Interpreting the AMION Schedule

CLINICS

Continuity clinics for the entire year are complete and posted on AMION.

  • Clinics are cancelled during MRICU, VAICU, CCU, NF, Away and Vacation
  • Clinics are cancelled post MRICU and VAICU overnight call
  • Clinics are cancelled for Residents on long call and short at MCV and on long call at the VA (rescheduled to Friday PM of the same week when possible, rescheduled elsewhere if necessary - please check carefully each month)
  • Clinics are cancelled for Residents for Monday AM on Intern switch days
  • All Residents are expected to attend clinic and other clinical duties (consult rounds, specialty clinics) on Wednesday AM of switch days, even if post NF
  • All Interns are expected to attend clinic and other clinical duties (consult rounds, specialty clinics) on Monday AM of switch days, even if post NF
  • Clinics are closed on holidays and adjusted as necessary for retreats, etc - may be rescheduled to get all residents to minimum numbers (check individual schedules)
  • Fan free clinic will occur during ACSB, ACC and SH blocks only
  • Gyn and MH clinic for WH residents not yet entered

Med Peds Clinics scheduling is being done by – please contact him if you have any questions or concerns about your clinic schedule.

All other clinics are scheduled by .

Clinics are cancelled for the following special events. Please confirm that you do not have clinic on these dates if the event applies to you.

  1. PGY2 Teaching retreat - September 2-3, 2008.
    No PGY2 clinics both days.
  2. PGY3 retreat/workshop – Nov 5th, 2008.
    No PGY3/4 clinics for entire day.
  3. Holiday period – Dec 23 – Jan 2.
    No continuity clinics. Urgent clinics continue.
  4. PGY 1 Retreat February 13, 2009
    All PGY 1 clinics cancelled
  5. Transition session PGY2 to PGY3 - June 23rd, 2009.
    No PGY2 clinics 12pm-5pm

CALL SCHEDULES

The call schedule for the entire year is complete and posted on AMION. As usual, your call days/nights are denoted by a red moon on the AMION calendar.

  • MCV WARDS: Short and Long Call are designated on AMION in the calendar view for the block you are assigned to MCV Wards
  • VA WARDS: Long call days are denoted by the red moon. Please remember that Short Call days are the day BEFORE Long Call.
  • HEMEONC: The two HemeOnc residents take call on Friday or Saturday night. Sunday-Thursday nights are covered by night float. Friday and Saturday night calls were assigned on an alternating basis.
  • VAICU / MRICU – call nights as noted
  • CCU – refer to separate block schedule under Curriculum section of ERIC

BRIDGE RESIDENT

This year we will only be using a Bridge Resident system to help with cross-cover at MCV during the Tuesday afternoon Conference Block from 2pm to 7pm. The schedule for the first 3 Blocks is posted on AMION. Expectations are outlined under the curriculum for Inpatient Rotations on ERIC.

PULL CALL

The Pull Call periods for the entire year is scheduled and posted on AMION. Every resident was assigned two 14 day periods of Pull Call.

On AMION, Pull call is only visible by viewing individual months, not by viewing the year rotation summary at the top of your schedule.

When on Pull Call, residents must be available by pager at all times. Residents must return pages within 15 minutes and must be available for clinical duty within one hour.

Residents are not permitted to exchange individual days of the pull rotation with other residents or to change the pull schedules outside the "Free Switch" periods (please see below). Please review the Program’s Pull Call Policy on the ERIC website. This is currently listed under the "policies" heading.

PRIMARY CARE CALL

The Primary Care Call Schedule for the entire year is complete and posted on AMION. All PGY3 Residents take Primary Care call during are assigned one block of Primary Care Call. This is also only visible by viewing individual months on AMION. Please review the Primary Care On-Call Guidelines for further details.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

You have been assigned to either the First (Dec 23-Dec 27) or Second (Dec 29-Jan 2) Holiday vacation.  You must plan to be available for clinical duties (day and night) during the 5 day period that you are not scheduled for vacation. The holiday call and coverage schedule has NOT been completed at this time.  This will be released in the coming months.

REQUEST FOR SCHEDULE CHANGES

Any future changes in your schedule must be submitted to for PGY2-4 or for Interns during the Switch Periods. During these Switch Periods, you may adjust elective rotations, vacations and PULL blocks. Call months (this includes ICUs, Wards, MAR, Hem/Onc) are finalized and will only be adjusted in extremely extenuating circumstances.

The Switch Periods are:

Switch Period For Changes Affecting Blocks
June 15 — June 30 Blocks 4 — 6
September 10 — September 23 Blocks 7 — 9
December — January 13 Blocks 10 — 13

Switches will only be considered during these time periods and will be applied to the relevant blocks at the close of each switch period. 

Remember that all absences from assigned duties (including sick leave, family bereavement, interview/educational leave) require that the Leave Request Form be completed and submitted as outlined on ERIC.  All leave requests must be approved by a Chief Medical Resident and Dr Call.
