Purpose:

  • The purpose of the rotation is to allow the PGY-1 and PGY-2 Women’s Health resident to have a dedicated month’s experience in various Women’s Health related clinics to broaden their knowledge base in this area. During this month, the resident will rotate through clinics at VCU, the VA, and at the Stony Point Women’s Health Center. Residents have flexibility within the rotation to tailor the schedule to meet their own educational goals. It is the resident’s responsibility to contact preceptors in advance to arrange their schedule for the month. This should be done 2-4 weeks in advance of starting the rotation. Residents will continue to attend their regularly scheduled continuity clinic as well as assigned Gyn, Fan Free, and Mental Health clinics. Residents are required to attend regularly scheduled conferences. If working at Stony Point, it may be more convenient to go to Morning Report or Noon conference at McGuire VAMC.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the rotation, residents will be able to:

  • Patient Care:
    • Experience ambulatory care of women in the general medicine, subspecialty, and Gynecologic setting.
    • Identify and perform an accurate history and physical exam that is appropriate for the general medicine or subspecialty clinic and the presenting complaints.
    • Develop skills in managing common presentations of disorders either unique to women or which may present differently in women.
    • Identify the appropriate laboratory, radiographic, and other studies indicated to provide appropriate diagnostic testing in the ambulatory women’s health setting.
    • Develop increased comfort in diagnosis and management of women’s health issues throughout the life cycle to better provide comprehensive care for women.
  • Medical Knowledge:
    • Recognize and be able to compile a differential diagnosis for common women’s health medical problems.
    • Interpret laboratory and radiographic studies in the context of patient care in a women’s health clinic or subspecialty clinic.
    • Appropriately identify the necessary work-up of women’s health disorders prior to referral to a specialist.
  • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement:
    • Become familiar with the necessary work-up of women’s health disorders prior to referral to a specialist.
    • Recognize how to utilize available clinics and resources to make timely and appropriate diagnoses, referral, and management decisions for women’s health disorders.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
    • Develop skills in effective communication and utilization of consultative services for appropriate and comprehensive care of women.
  • Professionalism:
    • Demonstrate respect and compassion in interactions with colleagues, patients, and families.
    • Demonstrate effective communication of clinical questions, medical problems and interventions to consultation services to facilitate continuity of patient care.
  • Systems-Based Practice:
    • Be familiar with career options in the area of women’s health and systems-based practice in a women’s health clinic setting.
    • Be familiar with the components of the health care team in the comprehensive care of women.

Expectations:

  • Arrangement of clinics to be attended in advance of starting the rotation, tailored to the resident’s individual educational goals.
  • Attendance and punctuality for all clinics.
  • Completion of patient documentation.
  • Discuss presentation and proposed management of every patient evaluated with the attending physician supervisor.
  • Reading of pertinent articles based on clinics attended and patients seen.
  • Attendance of regularly required program conferences. If working at Stony Point, consider attending morning report or noon conference at the VA instead of downtown, if more convenient.
